New York Financial Firm Staircase

New York, NY

This New York Financial Firm staircase is located in midtown Manhattan. Feature Walters worked on the interior staircase with Structure Tone, who was awarded the workplace and conference center. The scope was to encourage interaction among staffers and give them a light, bright environment—both of which would be difficult given the 50,000- to 100,000-square-foot floor plates.

The architectural firm LSM was familiar with this New York Financial Firm office and the challenges of mid-century structures, having transformed offices in the Seagram Building and Lever House. Utilized in the space were curves throughout the building to soften the design. Meeting rooms and stairwells were rounded, as well as the furnishings, such as the curved reception area, chairs, marble-topped coffee table, and sofa. The conference center’s feature stair widens at the top and bottom to form an elegant curvature that pulls you up. The curved theme and sophisticated simplicity are carried throughout with glass railings and guardrails of the conference center’s stairs.

Feature Walters was involved in the process early on with design assist. Based on the design Feature Walters then fabricated the staircase components. Metropolitan Walters in New York completed the installation.

Our Role

Feature Walters was involved in the process early on with design assist on this New York Financial Firm staircase. Based on the design Feature Walters then fabricated the staircase components. Metropolitan Walters in New York completed the installation.

Overcoming Challenges

Feature Walters was required to produce very sharp steel plate edges to achieve the look desired by the architect. Bending such a tight radius was beyond the usual standards, but Feature Walters achieved the desired result.

The stainless steel handrails fabricated to specifications hide the connections which pass through cutouts in the terrazzo treads. The stair tread supports required careful coordination with the stone supplier to ensure support members could pass through the openings in the feature stone wall to give a floating effect.
