University of Toronto Pavilion

Toronto, ON

Our client, Ellis Don, has been entrusted with the Landmark Project, one of the most significant open-space projects undertaken at the University of Toronto in the last century. This transformative project aims to breathe new life into 20 acres of central campus space at the downtown St. George campus, transitioning it into a greener, more sustainable, accessible, and pedestrian friendly space. The project’s scope entails the historic revitalization of the front and back of the campus over the next few years.

Our contribution is encompassed within the landscapes surrounding the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The courtyard outside the medical sciences building has been rejuvenated with the addition of two new gardens and benches, and now serves as a beautiful and inviting meeting place for students and faculty.

Feature Walters is proud of our involvement in crafting the pavilion structure, which will be situated in the future Temerty Plaza—a centerpiece of the newly revitalized outdoor space on the downtown campus. This sleek, curved pavilion, featuring a glass façade, is designed to seamlessly blend with the architectural elements in its vicinity and serve as the southeast access point to the new underground parking facility.

Our Role

Feature Walters scope of the project was the fabrication and erection of the pavilion structure. We supplied and installed anchor bolts, fourteen exposed stainless-steel columns, the structural steel roof and the metal decking that adorns the top.

In addition to the pavilion, we also supplied structural steel in the underground parking area. This encompassed pipe support framing, opening steel and slide bearings.

Facts & Figures

  • 14 stainless steel columns for the pavilion
  • Each column was approximately 4.5 meters tall
  • Each column had an AESS 3 finish and were polished to match XL Blend S
  • The project had 411 assemblies
  • The roof steel of the pavilion was galvanized

Overcoming Challenges

The Feature Walters team overcame a variety of challenges throughout the duration of this project. From welding stainless steel to mild steel, to adjusting delivery access as the site evolved, each obstacle demanded our adaptability skills.

In addition, we experienced a schedule extension pushing our completion from 2022 to 2024, which required us to adjust our timeline. Upon reaching the erection stage, we had to expedite our installation in order to fulfill our client’s tight deadline for project completion. All these challenges were handled with proactiveness and innovation, a testament to our abilities at Feature Walters.
