Structural steel finishing is a vital surface treatment technique that transforms the properties of steel structures, enhancing both their functionality and aesthetics. This step in the fabrication process prepares the steel for various applications, ensuring optimal performance and appearance.
At Feature Walters, our expertise lies not only in our diverse finishing techniques but also in the artistry of painted coatings! With a palette of colours and finishes at our disposal, we empower clients to manifest their architectural visions in vibrant hues or subtle tones. Beyond aesthetics, our painted coatings safeguard steel structures, ensuring longevity and endurance amidst the elements.
Expert guidance, provided by Feature Walters, can greatly assist in determining the most suitable finish for a specific application.
Now, let’s delve into the diverse capabilities of painted coatings!
Painted Coating
Painted coatings are a popular choice for enhancing the appearance of steel structures. With a wide range of colors and finishes available, painted coatings allow architects and designers to unleash their creativity and bring their visions to life. Whether it’s a vibrant pop of color or a subtle matte finish, painted coatings can be tailored to suit any aesthetic preference. Beyond aesthetics, these coatings also provide protection against corrosion and weathering, ensuring the longevity of the steel components. From architectural landmarks to everyday stairs, painted coatings can add both beauty and resilience to the world of steel!
Epoxy and Urethane Coating
- Epoxy is a two-component paint system often used a high-build primer is used and sanded to achieve architectural results before applying a final topcoat.
- Epoxy coatings have very high corrosion resistance and are good for use indoors but are weak in UV light, they tend to yellow over time especially when left in direct sunlight.
- Urethane topcoats are great for outdoors in high-wear environments, known for their durability, abrasion resistance and flexibility.
- They are typically used for projects that are exposed to outdoor conditions or for high performance situations.
- Epoxy and urethane come in a large variety of pigments and shades making it a diverse and useful coating option.
Feature Walters fabricated, surface prepped and painted this striking gateway ‘F’ sign for the entrance to the new Fraser Mills community in British Columbia.
The sign was coated in a satin sheen polysiloxane offering our clients a major improvement in durability and aesthetics for aggressive exposure conditions in all seasons.
Automotive Paint
- They are typically made from acrylic-polyurethanes which are a combination of two different types of plastics, both useful for protective and decorative coatings.
- To achieve a smooth finish many different coats are needed.
- Automotive paint coatings are extremely costly with a long lead time, and it is typically used on very high-end architectural projects.
The Approaching Red Sculpture is located in central Toronto. The sculpture consists of two massive, curved plates of steel finished in red automotive paint.
The painted coating process was complex and meticulous as any wrinkle or dimple in the steel can impact the high-gloss face of automative paint.
Acrylic Paint
- Acrylic is one of the most cost-effective painted coating options and offers short lead times during fabrication.
- This type of paint provides no protection from the elements and is often used for indoor low contact projects.
- It is available in most pigments and shades, making it a versatile paint option for many projects.
All the Paint Possibilities!
As we wrap up our exploration of painted coating finishes, one thing is clear: the realm of possibilities is boundless! Painted coatings open up a world of creativity and versatility, offering endless opportunities for expression and functionality.
