National Music Centre - Studio Bell

Calgary, AB

Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (NMC), is not only unique in Canada in terms of collections and programming, but it is also Calgary’s first national cultural institution. The NMC provides the nation with another architectural landmark that will draw music lovers and design buffs from around the world. The building opened in 2016, and has been cited to be a catalyst for an urban neighbourhood that’s been rebranded as the East Village.

Our Role

Walters Group’s role was to supply, detail, fabricate and erect all of the structural steel required for construction of the façade and the stairs.

Facts & Figures

  • King Eddy Building – 90 tons
  • Main Building – 1200 tons
  • The Main building has a bridge that spans over 4th Avenue SE Street. This bridge connects the East and West buildings.

Overcoming Challenges

Scheduling was critical as all the steel was shipped via transport truck from Hamilton to Calgary. It was very important to ensure shop fabrication stayed well ahead of the steel erection team. The site was also tight with a very small laydown area. Steel deliveries were carefully coordinated with the site team to ensure that just the right amount of steel that could be erected each day was delivered. A temporary working platform was designed and installed over the road to minimize road closure time.
